The Angels / concert

It was only a few months before his death that Jonathan Harvey completed his ultimate work, the Plain Songs for Peace and Light - and thus demonstrates, despite a constant commitment to the most futuristic technology, fidelity to vocal writing. a cappella, to which he has always returned. Speaking about I love the Lord, written 36 years earlier, he already evokes the deep imprint left on him by listening to the choral liturgy week after week. Around Harvey, it is the splendid tradition of the English choirs that this concert makes live. From Winchester to the refectory of the monks of Royaumont, the Gothic walls of the abbeys echo a polyphonic music, sumptuous and magnified by the acoustics. The sonorous echo answers here the dialogue of the texts: Harvey resumes entirely, in The Annunciation, the first stanza of the Stabat Mater of Palestrina, whose text sublimates the pain of the mother of Jesus - and thus closes the cycle of the birth and the death of Christ, seen by her. To the humility and anguish of the penitent, expressed by the painful dissonances of Byrd Ave verum, responds the serenity of the believer, which Harvey expresses by the stability of a perfect chord. The symmetrical Remember of Harvey and Purcell also call to reactivate the prodigious sound memories that continue to haunt the Anglican cathedrals.
