Cité de la Voix - National Vocal Arts Center

From January 1, 2023, Les Métaboles, vocal ensemble directed by Léo Warynski. are all associated with the Cité de la Voix.

On the strength of complicit and demanding work begun several months ago, this new association is perfectly in line with the continuity of the missions of the Center national d'art vocal as much as it represents a new major artistic stage under the sign of a vision audacious about the future of choral music. The multiple collaboration spaces will make it possible to intensify the influence of vocal music - particularly a cappella - in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, of which the Cité de la Voix with the associated ensemble represent the epicenter in terms of creation, distribution, transmission, training and development of the resource

The ensemble Les Métaboles will thus occupy a central place at the Rencontres musicales de Vézelay and in the public season (2023: Alfred Schnittke, Concerto for choir); will participate in structuring educational projects ("100% choir" Auxerre and Gray) and in the training of young conductors by reinforcing not only the international ambition of the Choral Conducting Academy (co-direction Léo Warynski and Daniel Reuss in 2023) but also through an unprecedented tutoring system from 2024.

Finally, constant attention to sharing the vocal repertoire everywhere and for everyone will guide all the projects initiated between Les Métaboles and La Cité de la Voix – choice of forms, concerts outside the walls, transversality of disciplines, diversity and originality of repertoires, cultural actions and public participation – in a spirit of curiosity, creativity and openness, continually ensuring the involvement of actors from the fields of economic, social and cultural life in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.

The Canadian composer Raymond Murray Schafer has developed in his music a most singular philosophical approach, his vocal works seeking to establish a spiritual link with Nature, by creating real soundscapes, drawing inspiration for this from Native American culture. The vocal ensemble Les Métaboles excels in the interpretation of this metaphysical repertoire. Completed by a piece by Estonian composer Veljo Tormis, this concert is set in motion by choreographer Éric Oberdorff, assuring the public of an extraordinary mystical experience.

Thursday, June 22 2023 - 08:30 pmMétamorphose(s)Chants libres - Église Notre-Dame de Noyers

Les Métaboles and the cellist Marc Coppey, offer a program under the sign of metamorphosis. Some works are transformed, such as a Chaconne by Bach and Agnus Dei by Barber, transcribed for cello and choir. Others translate the metamorphosis musically, such as the eponymous work by Philippe Hersant inspired by the four seasons or the creation of the Japanese composer Noriko Baba. The ultimate change of state, that of passing from life to death, is explored in John Tavener's Svyati.
