COMPOSITION ACADEMY

To be in direct contact with young composers, to encourage them to take an interest in vocal music and to offer them to know high-level performers seems fascinating to us and that is why the Métaboles is interested in this University of composition project.

ARCO is an academy of binational composition which associates the Gmem - Marseille from July 3 to 13 and which includes Les Métaboles & L'Ensemble Multilaterale.

The 2026 edition will take place at the Mozarteum in Salzburg from July 1st to 12th, 2026. It will host 14 composers from around the world, 6 singers, 4 instrumentalists, and 1 string quartet. The young artists will be mentored by Wen Deqing, Elisabeth Gutjahr, Laure M. Hiendl, Sarah Nemtsov, Eva Reiter, Yann Robin, Johanness Maria Staud, Valérie Philippin, Alain Billard, Matteo Caseari, Pieter Jansen, and Pablo Tognan.

Under the direction of Léo Warynski, the ensembles Multilatérale and Les Métaboles are joined by soprano Valérie Philippin, a major figure in vocal creation, for an eclectic and daring program blending contemporary repertoire with world premieres commissioned for the occasion.

This program, reflecting the spirit of the academy, spans generations, aesthetics, and vocal and instrumental practices. It will showcase diverse personalities and sensibilities: from the iconic works of Georges Aperghis, Pierre Boulez, Jacques Rebotier, and Johannes Schöllhorn to new works by Lanqing Ding, Valérie Philippin, and Ikumi Yamauchi.

ARCO – Art, Research and Creation Opus 2019 – is a binational university of composition, association between the Gmem-Marseille (one of the French National Center of Musical Creation) and the Mozarteum University Salzbourg.

Hosted by the Gmem, this first edition will welcome in Marseille, from July 5th to 14th, twelve composers from all over the world. Throughout the week seminars, workshops and concerts will be given. Written for the occasion, the students’ pieces will be rehearsed, performed and professionnaly recorded during two closing concerts.
