Les Métaboles and Léo Warynski shine the spotlight on the repertoire for multiple choirs. The principle of writing separate choirs experienced its Baroque golden age under the vaults of the Sistine Chapel – witness Allegri’s Miserere for two choirs, the sacred works of Marc-Antoine Charpentier, who admired these polyphonies during his trip to Italy, or Orazio Benevolo’s Missa tu es petrus, for four choirs, recently resurrected by Les Métaboles. Composed on the same principle of spatialization, Love by Juta Pranulyte will echo them.

Created in 1930, the Symphony of Psalms testifies to Stravinsky's fervent return to religion. Unclassifiable, “this prayer that bites, this prayer of steel” as Leonard Bernstein described it, completes a fresco of piety of great evocative force, like a wall of icons sculpted in the harmony of an alliance with summit between Les Métaboles and the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra.

The opening night of the ManiFeste festival constitutes an immense montage, a whirlwind that spreads from the image to the music. The young Danish composer Simon Steen-Andersen has designed an ultra-virtuoso collage where the orchestra, the jazz band and the vocal ensemble Les Métaboles present in the room play with a series of living archives – a deep and hilarious journey into our own musical memory. The Summer Playlist includes and wide-ranging, up to Ravel’s La Valse, danced on the rooftops of Brussels by Thomas Hauert’s company. Aerobatics and whirling, a summer playlist, where the eye listens.

Is there any prayer sweeter and more sublime than Fauré's Requiem, is there any melody more sweet than Jean Racine's Cantique? In Les Djinns, based on Victor Hugo’s virtuoso poem, the composer on the contrary unleashes the most frightening hordes. But it is indeed the most tender Fauré that we find in the two other pieces: the melancholy Pavane, to which the dandy Robert de Montesquiou, cousin of the dedicatee, offered delicately old-fashioned verses, and the concert suite taken from the incidental music for Pelléas et Mélisande, the play by Maurice Maeterlinck, with the famous “Sicilienne”.

Dear Pierre-Yves Macé,
the writing is willingly a palimpsest, the rewriting, incessantly, of what is already written, for the pleasure of it, to go through the forms again and disturb the lines, to arrange their sequences differently. This concert thus invites us to a few miniatures, a tribute to brevity even in the genres of tradition, opera and cantata.

Two composers, two shattered dreams: by the rigidity of social conventions in the case of Mel Bonis, by illness in that of Lili Boulanger, who died at 24 after a life of suffering. No one today questions their talent. The sensuality and refinement of their scores place them on a par with their contemporary Debussy, the tutelary figure to whom they are so often compared. All this before the jubilation of Gloria by Poulenc, composed "thinking of those frescoes by Gozzoli where the angels stick out their tongues and also of those grave Benedictines that I once saw playing football". Everything sings at Ravel's: the strings of Daphnis and Chloé, the piano from Jeux d'eau or the whirlwind of fantastic characters from L’Enfant et les Sortilèges. However, his work for a cappella choir is reduced to the twirling but very short Three Songs. Never mind ! Didn't Ravel himself transcribe, here for piano, there for orchestra, a good part of his catalog? Here is Ma mère d'Oye, Miroirs, Scheherazade offered to the virtuosity and playfulness of the singers of the Métaboles - and in creation, the transcriptions of the Bolero and Pavane pour une infante défunte

Through the centuries, Léo Warynski unearths relatives, emphasizes family tunes, in a long line of composers touched by grace. Rameau, offers an address to heaven, a five-part motet rarely given because cleverly concealed in his Treaty of Harmony. Marc-Antoine Charpentier - who was able to observe during a trip to Italy what in Venice was called the "cori spezzati": the dialogue of vocal groups installed on either side of a church - delivers a sumptuous Salve Regina with three choirs. But the centerpiece of this new program is signed Orazio Benevolo, a little-known musician, chapel master at the Vatican from 1646 to 1672. Thanks to the conductor and musicologist Louis Castelain, who patiently copied the score in a Roman library, the Metaboles sing for the first time since the 17th century this four-choir Mass by the Italian composer. A novel, in a way, which parallels the one written by the very young Lithuanian composer Juta Pranulyte.

The a cappella vocal writing of the composers recorded on this disc reveals, by their precision and their attention to detail, that they were also great orchestrators.
The Métaboles and their conductor, Léo Warynski, paid particular attention to the intelligibility and expressiveness of the voices, but also to the restitution of this orchestral dimension by means of all the dynamic palette that a choir can offer: the almost whispered piano at the strongest the widest and most intense.

Coming home one night straight after a car accident, a woman feels her memory coming back to the edge of her consciousness and remembers all the fragments that make up what one calls the self: the happy times and the bereavements, the emotions and the memories imbued with eroticism, the dark thoughts, the people close to her, her emotions when faced with art…
Like a stream of consciousness, Papillon Noir is sung in a continuous yet halting breath by the soprano Elise Chauvin. Punctuated by the echoes of the Bardo Thödol, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Papillon Noir is an operatic monodrama, for voice, instrumental ensemble, choir and electronic devices, that creates a dialogue between music and text, awakening and forgetting, the secular and the sacred.

More than thirty years ago, Tim Burton offered composer Danny Elfman the first opportunity to write a score: it was the time of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. Both lovers of independent rock and horror films, the two creators have forged a common aesthetic. Since then, Elfman and Burton have worked together on more than a dozen feature films. Alice in Wonderland is without a doubt one of their most successful projects: the orchestration, at once luminous, strange and frightening, serves the characters imagined by Tim Burton.

Whether it’s Barber – and his famous Agnus Dei, but also his The Reincarnations, a cycle of songs based on Irish poems – Copland – a major figure of his generation, and author of an important body of choral works – or more recently Eric Whitacre, a young composer whose reputation has long spread beyond the borders of the United States.
To accompany this musical program, Quentin Bisch has imagined a cycle of four fragrances that lead the audience from dusk to dawn.

Messe un jour ordinaire (Mass an ordinary day) revolves mainly around two texts: the ritual of Mass and the insignificant words of Laurence, a young woman adrift, an ordinary addict, who has now passed away, from a filmed document by Jean-Michel Carré, « Galère de femmes ». The two are confronted: the emphatic, dramatic, self-assured collective speech and the individual, modest, minimal, human and insignificant speech.

During her most recent concerts in Lyon, in particular at the Chapelle de la Trinité, Yaël Naïm celebrated the subtle melding of her songs with the strings of the Quatuor Debussy. This time the singer focuses on the voice, the central element of her writing.
Over time, in her albums, Yaël Naïm has orchestrated many choirs: gospel style, children’s choirs, or the trio 3somesisters. This time, in keeping with this approach, it’s with the a capella vocal ensemble Les Métaboles, whose performances range from Puccini to Pink Floyd, from Bach to Debussy, that she will deliver a superb selection of original songs spiced up with some classics.

Léo Warynski’s Les Métaboles decide to work, for the first time, with the score of the Italian Master.
If Aeschylus is to be believed, Io met Prometheus, in chains, while she was wandering aimlessly to escape from Hera’s vengeful jealousy. To craft the libretto of Io, frammento da Prometeo, Massimo Cacciari uses fragments of this drama, which he intertwines with excerpts from Hölderlin’s Song of destiny.
But when Luigi Nono seizes upon the textual matter, he rids it of all narrative intention and exploits its acoustic potential, considering that “in music, only sounds can speak”.

This show for 8 singers and electronic devices immerses us in the unique soundscape of the garden of Royaumont and questions the way we move, understand, communicate and exchange there. Inspired by the poem in Latin by the epicurean Titus Lucretius Carus, Se Rerum Natura, the work surrounds the audience with a whirlwind of sounds for an immersive concert experience, an experience of expression and understanding for the performers, of listening for the audience.

This program is conceived like a walk in nature, forests, and gardens. The works sometimes evoke an enchanted forest (La Ronde or Le Jardin Féerique by Ravel), then animals (le Chant des Oiseaux by Janequin), or flowers (Flower Songs by Britten). The music of Murray Schafer (A Garden of Bells, The Spirit Garden) and Diana Soh (Nature of Things, a commission for Les Métaboles), develops the idea of an soundscape: a fascinating combination of vocal movements, percussions, onomatopoeia, evocations of rituals that reveal the metaphysical dimension of the relationship between man and nature.

This original project was born from a shared desire of the Ensemble Multilatérale and the Orchestre National de Jazz to come together for a singular creation, at the crossroads, with one unique and ambitious goal: the quest for the extraordinary. Long-time fellow traveller of Multilatérale, upholder of the concept of saturation, which also resonates strongly with the musical orientations of the ONF, Raphaël Cendo is the driving force behind this collaboration.

La Sirène d’Auber is a screwball comedy that, in the manner of traditional Italian comedies, is filled with surprises and revelations. Ruses, loves and betrayals take place at a frenzied pace and then unravel. Desire, passion and power are at the heart of this sensual and transgressive fable that finds resolution only in the overthrowing of the established order. Though joy and comedy appear to be the major themes of the work, La Sirène is nevertheless a criticism of power and its abuses, finding a strong echo in today’s world.

The Rothko Chapel is a “spiritual environment, a place for contemplation” (Feldman), located in Houston, commissioned by the collectors John and Dominique de Ménil and created by the painter Mark Rothko.
After years of work, in 1970, the unthinkable happens: the painter commits suicide. After the inauguration, the collectors commission a musical creation from Morton Feldman, a friend of Rothko’s, to resonate with the walls of the Rothko Chapel, but also to symbolize its spiritual elevation. Feldman delivers a very personal score, incorporating quite a few events from his life: a melody written on the day of Stravinsky’s funeral in New York; or the final movement of the alto, a Hebraic song he composed when he was fifteen.
